Aminexil: An Overview and Its Role in Battling Hair Loss

Aminexil

Aminexil, a molecule developed by L’Oreal, is often found in hair care products marketed to treat hair loss. It is usually combined with other active ingredients, such as vitamins and minerals, to nourish the hair from its roots and promote healthier and stronger hair growth.

The premise behind Aminexil’s effect on hair loss lies in its mechanism of action. It is designed to combat the stiffening of hair follicles’ collagen sheaths, a process referred to as “fibrosis”. The stiffening or hardening process can result in the hair’s weakening and premature aging, leading to hair loss.

How does it work?

Aminexil purportedly works by increasing the suppleness and flexibility of these collagen sheaths, allowing the hair to grow in a healthier environment. This improvement in the hair follicle environment can potentially result in prolonged hair life cycle and reduced hair loss.

Clinical Studies

Several clinical studies have been conducted to ascertain the efficacy of Aminexil in treating hair loss. A study published in the International Journal of Cosmetic Science reported that hair loss decreased significantly after 6 weeks of treatment with a lotion containing Aminexil in both men and women with androgenetic alopecia (pattern baldness). In another study by L’Oreal Research, a daily application of Aminexil for 42 days resulted in a 5% increase in the amount of hair in the anagen phase (the growth phase of the hair life cycle).

Side effects?

In terms of side effects, Aminexil is generally considered safe and well-tolerated. However, some individuals may experience scalp irritation, redness, or itching. As with any new treatment, it is recommended to consult with a healthcare professional or a dermatologist before starting to use products containing Aminexil.
